Leading from Within: Impacts on Social Determinants of Health

We will explore the Leading from Within model and demonstrate how this leadership approach positively impacts two components of the social determinants of health: personal efficacy and a feeling of belonging. Leading with this approach strengthens employee engagement and increases the health and well-being of providers, patients and health organizations.


Dr. Karen Sauer is a family physician at La Clinica Wellness Center and serves as the organization’s medical officer for clinician engagement, responsible for recruitment and employment of La Clinica’s physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.

She earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where she was given the Dr. Alexander Major Memorial Award. She completed her residency at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, California, where she was named chief resident her final year and received the Dr. Joseph R. Hannon Memorial Award.

Dr. Sauer first joined La Clinica in 1996 and returned in 2005 after a few years away. She is bilingual in English and Spanish, has lived in South America and Mexico, and has worked in migrant health and education since 1986.

Kim Oveson, MS, CADC II, CCFC, CHT currently serves as the Behavioral Health Coordinator for La Clinica a federally qualified health center in Medford Oregon with close to 400 staff providing medical, dental and behavioral health services to over 27,000 patients.

Kim brought her expertise as an Addiction and Mental Health specialist to the development of the Integrated Behavioral Health team and programs at La Clinica working side by side with medical and dental teams supporting trauma informed care for La Clinica patients and staff.

Kim holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and a Master’s degree in Social Science Applied Psychology from Southern Oregon University bring a background in behavioral health using her 26 years of counseling and coaching behavior change to her position.
